Rob Dyrdek : Who is he?

Rob Dyrdek is an American professional skateboarder, actor, producer, reality TV personality, and, most importantly, a successful serial entrepreneur. By the age of 50, he had built a media empire and became an icon in the world of skateboarding.

Rob Dyrdek’s career in skateboarding took off at a young age. When he was just 11, he gained sponsorship from Surf Ohio, a local skate shop in Dayton, Ohio. Around the same time, Gordon and Smith Skateboard Company (G&S), a national brand, also started sponsoring him as he entered into competitions. At the age of 15, Dyrdek achieved a significant milestone by winning first place at a National Skateboard Association North Central District competition.

Turning Pro

At 16, he skipped his senior year of high school and moved to Southern California to pursue skateboarding professionally. In 1991, he turned pro and achieved fifth place at the Skateboard World Cup in Germany. Dyrdek gained sponsorships from Alien Workshop, Droors Clothing (later known as DC Shoes), and founded his own skateboard accessory company, Orion Trucks, at 17.

Rob & Big

Rob Dyrdek had an impressive career with MTV, starting with the premiere of the reality series Rob & Big in November 2006. During the show’s run in 2007, Dyrdek accomplished a remarkable feat by setting 21 skating world records in a single day, which was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.

These records included impressive achievements like the longest board slide, spanning 100 feet 5.75 inches, the highest skateboard ramp jump into water at 10 feet 8 inches, and the most nollie kickflips completed in just one minute. After three successful seasons, Rob & Big concluded in April 2008.

Fantasy Factory

Following this, in February 2009, MTV introduced Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory, a show that featured Dyrdek, Pfaff, and his Dyrdek Enterprise staff. The series revolved around Dyrdek’s imaginative and adventurous “Fantasy Factory.” Notably, during the grand opening, Dyrdek even rode alongside Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on the world’s largest skateboard. Fantasy Factory aired for a total of seven seasons, with its season finale broadcast on March 13, 2014.

In this final episode, Dyrdek accomplished yet another incredible milestone by setting the Guinness World Record for the longest reverse ramp jump by a car, covering a distance of 89 feet 3.25 inches.

Creating Street League Skateboarding

Rob Dyrdek, in 2010, launched Street League Skateboarding (SLS), a series of professional skateboarding competitions. The championship event in 2012, which had the highest prize money in the sport’s history ($1.6 million), was broadcasted in 198 countries on ESPN. In 2013, Dyrdek’s documentary film, The Motivation, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, focusing on the organization. SLS has since grown into a worldwide series, hosting events across the globe.

Ridiculousness

Rob Dyrdek’s career with MTV has been filled with notable milestones. In August 2011, his third MTV series, Ridiculousness, made its debut. The following year, Dyrdek Enterprises successfully acquired DNA Distribution, which encompassed his original skateboarding sponsor brand, Alien Workshop, as well as other popular brands like Habitat and Reflex. Pacific Vector Holdings later acquired DNA Distribution in October 2013.

Recognizing Dyrdek’s talent and success, MTV reached a multi-year agreement with his production company, Superjacket Productions, in 2014. This deal ensured the continued production of Ridiculousness and marked the final season of Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory.
