Who Is Mike Vallely?

Mike Vallely is a 54-year-old professional skateboarder from the United States of America. Mike started skateboarding in ’84, became pro in ’87, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in ’21. Besides being a professional skateboarder, Mike is also a singer, businessman, family man, and stuntman—he’s got it all. He is known as the founder of the skateboarding company, Street Plant, and a member of the hardcore punk band, Black Flag.

Vallely’s Early Life And Career

Mike Vallely started skateboarding in the autumn of 1984, fueled by his passion and talent for the sport. Just two years later in the spring of 1986, Powell Peralta sponsored him. That summer, Vallely won the NSA National Amateur Streetstyle Championship and appeared on the cover of Thrasher magazine, thus making a name for himself. Vallely’s impressive skating skills caught the attention of professional skateboarder Neil Blender, who was observing from atop the vert ramp. Alongside Blender, renowned skateboarders Lance Mountain and Stacy Peralta, both affiliated with Powell Peralta and the Bones Brigade, were also impressed by Vallely’s talent.

In 1987, Vallely switched to professional skateboarding and in 1988 moved to Las Vegas. Powell Peralta released his first pro model skateboard that same year. The following year, Vallely left Powell Peralta to help form World Industries, a company which revolutionized the skateboard industry.

Vallely’s hard work and dedication to skateboarding paid off in 1995 when he won the first annual Skatepark of Tampa Pro Street Contest in Tampa, Florida and competed in the first ever X Games. The following year, Vallely made history by becoming the first professional skateboarder to do demonstrations in China. In 1998, Etnies Footwear released Vallely’s first signature skateboard shoe, further cementing his legacy as one of the most influential skateboarders of all time.

The rise of Mike Vallely

Mike Vallely has been a pioneering skateboarder since the early 1980’s and is still pushing the boundaries of skateboarding today. In 2001, Vallely joined Tony Hawk on tour, appearing in his video games and TV series. In 2002, he released DRIVE, started a band & recorded a solo record with Grushecky.

Vallely was also a guest vocalist at the Black Flag Reunion Show at the Hollywood Palladium in 2003. Since then, Vallely has starred in DRIVE: Notes From The Wilderness on Fuel TV, created Mike V’s Video On Demand skateboard instructional segments on digital cable and released an album with his new band Revolution Mother.Vallely continues to do charity work for the NHL and has been a board member of the Tony Hawk Foundation and the Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship. He recently appeared in the movie Paul Blart: Mall Cop and continues to pursue his passion for skateboarding today.
